The Fixed Income Market Risk Manager – Broker/Dealer is primarily responsible for aggregating and evaluating broker/dealer market risk mortgage trading activities. In carrying out the responsibilities of this position, the incumbent acts as an independent body to provide preventative and detective tools to mitigate risk and oversees resolution.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Monitor and Measure Market Risk & Trading Activities: Develops and implements robust analytical models that provide valuation and risk assessment reporting of the comprehensive broker/dealer to support proactive business line decision making and risk management. Performs analyses on the Bank’s most complex trading exposures and strategies which requires critical thinking, high order of analytical, interpretive and/or constructive thinking and a broad understanding of varied trade situations. Monitors performance vs. risk limits and follow-up with appropriate parties. Works independently with support from Manager and is expected to recommend and implement improvements to established procedures as well as utilize innovations and new technologies, as applicable, to efficiently measure market risk exposure. Works independently to develop and test operational controls and provides recommendations for  improvement. Various interactions with trading desks including understanding of current market dynamics on liquidity and spread performance

  2. Communication/Teamwork: Responsible for communicating, advocating and coordinating risk management approaches and policies within the Broker/Dealer. Involves significant collaboration with various lines of business. Partners with Corporate Treasury and Risk Management to increase risk awareness and drive efforts to strengthen the control environment. Leads and/or guides team members in presentations to senior leader, trading supervisors and trainers of market risk findings and assessment of remediation plan recommendations. Utilizes a consultative approach to encourage early escalation and resolution of potential issues

  3. Profitability Analysis: Analyze and attribute the profit and loss of the broker/dealer trading desks and evaluate the use of, and return on, the capital required to support trading activity

  4. Developing Self and Others: Researches relevant industry, financial services and regulatory issues to build upon knowledge base, identifies trends and uses acquired knowledge to recommend changes & modifications to established protocols and procedures. Administers market risk management training for business units and model owners. Mentors and provides guidance to junior staff within the department

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:

  • Experience with some form of trading participation
  • Experience with third-party risk systems such as Risk Metrics, MSCI YeildBook, and Bloomberg is preferred
  • Significant Programing experience in languages such as SQL, R, Matlab, VBA, C++, Java, and Python
  • Experience with database query and analytics tools/methods (e.g. SQL) is required
  • Demonstrated experience in the ability to proactively monitor and identify root cause and to develop long term related solutions

This level of knowledge is normally acquired through a completion of a Bachelor’s degree and 8 to 10 years’ of experience within the financial services industry with extensive knowledge/understanding of financial institution products and services, risk management standards and financial theory or 13-15 years equivalent work related experience. Masters’ Degree in Quantitative Finance related field and CFA and/or FRM designation, or progress toward, preferred
