Team Lead - Credit Specialist IV, Business Banking

The Team Lead Credit Specialist IV is responsible for the independent preparation of financial analysis for BB Credit Requests from both prospects and customers. Analytical responsibilities involve varying levels of borrower and credit complexity, including credit exposures in excess of $20,000,000. The Credit Specialist IV is responsible for understanding policy guidelines and exhibits proficiency in discussing and recommending credit structures with the highest level of BB management, which are both prudent and competitive. Excellent communication skills, sound judgment, the ability to mitigate risk, and structure credit requests which meet the needs of both the customer and bank is required. A CS IV will have fully demonstrated their abilities in these areas, such that they are capable of managing credit approval responsibilities. Depending on the needs of the Department, loan authority may or may not be immediately delegated, however any new loan authority granted within the department will most often be assigned to a CS IV. This position is also responsible for the credit training and coaching of less tenured Credit Specialists, managing departmental workflows, holding team meetings, and functions as a valued resource to Sr. RM’s, CRM’s and BB Management with respect to loan policy and prudent underwriting standards. Advanced knowledge and experience in analyzing complex structures, interpreting and deducing varying facts and circumstances, administration, and strong communication skills are required to effectively correspond with internal employees, as well as business owners and management.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Prepares complex financial analysis; performs analysis of the largest and most complex credits/loans, involves sensitive or  critical customer accounts which substantially effect lending and relationship profits for the division; completes independent analysis and risk assessments for both significant prospects and key existing relationships; Makes recommendations to Relationship Managers regarding appropriate loan products and loan structure based upon findings
  2. Evaluates and may, depending on the needs of the department, decision loan requests for relationships within assigned approval authority across the bank’s footprint
  3. Independently prepares commitment reports; participates in credit discussions with RMs, Market Managers and senior management; influences credit decisions of senior management via the findings and recommendations contained in the Commitment Reports
  4. Provides direct and ongoing training to new and entry level Credit Specialists, and serves as an accomplished resource to RMs with respect to loan underwriting, and credit guidelines. Often provides underwriting, risk management, and credit policy training/guidance to less-tenured Relationship Managers and Credit Specialists

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:

  • Strong interpersonal, teamwork and flexibility skills are mandatory, as the Credit Specialist IV interacts with various Relationship Managers in a multi-state area
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of accounting and credit principles, lending functions, and credit analysis
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise consistent discretion and judgment regarding the credit process
  • Excellent multi-tasking skills are required as this role may frequently be working on multiple loan requests at any given time
  • Extensive knowledge of the Loan Grading Process

This level of knowledge is normally acquired through completion of a Bachelor’s degree and 10+ years Credit Analysis/Credit Specialist experience, including 5 + years of demonstrated Credit Decisioning (Loan Authority) experience. Prior involvement managing and coaching underwriting/credit personnel is strongly preferred.
