The Merchant Services Account Representative I is primarily responsible for the management of assigned commercial merchants, the sales of merchant payment processing solutions to (i.e., processing solutions for Visa/Discover and MasterCard), the conversion of merchants business to the TransFund payment processing system, and the ongoing support of the merchant processing relationships. This includes, developing complex pricing and processing proposals, training and educating merchants on all aspects of the merchant processing business, portfolio management including mitigating fraud and credit losses, and providing technical support.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Maintains existing commercial merchant clients with minimal fraud or credit losses by continually monitoring portfolio credit quality, potential fraud, deposit balances, processing exceptions, profitability, etc. in order to maintain and retain relationships. Develops new merchant business by prospecting, cold-calling, and responding to outside inquiries and interbank merchant referrals; assesses merchant needs, negotiates contracts, recommends equipment (method of transmission or equipment operations), and provides a customized quote for merchant payment processing including discount rates and fees.
  2. Determines merchant customer processing requirements; directs and participates in conversions; establishes objectives and develops project plans for conversions to new TF merchant processing platform; conducts customer training sessions on the use of the system features.
  3. Responds to operational/technical inquiries from customers; researches and troubleshoots technical problems (communication problems, hardware and software problems); interprets and explains procedures and industry regulations to merchants.
  4. Keeps abreast of current banking regulations, industry rules, economic and business trends, technology and customer’s need in order to keep existing customers apprised of new, revised and/or expanded services and handles customer requests for these services.
  5. Effectively monitors and manages merchant portfolio’s operating performance and financial condition; completing reviews of fraud and credit risk analysis quickly assessing and proactively identifying fraud and credit risk issues that could result in financial losses. Proactively identifies fraud schemes; engaging management to quickly resolve issues, reporting suspicious activity (SARS) and mitigate losses. Ensures Criticized/Classified accounts are monitored, stable or winding down and all deficiencies have been corrected.
  6. Proactively manage rejected ACH transactions by contacting clients, monitoring deposit account balances and quickly assessing financial condition and capturing funds. Actively manages collections of past due amounts and timely closing of undesirable relationships. Cross-sells/refers bank products and services to customers and prospects.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:
  • Thorough knowledge of merchant payment processing systems, Visa/MasterCard/Discover rules, merchant debit and credit card products, customer account management and bank operations/accounting
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including oral and written communications skills with ability to prepare and deliver complex and technical presentations
  • Good PC skills including word and spreadsheet applications
  • Ability to apply sales techniques and to negotiate and close business deals
This level of knowledge is normally acquired through completion of an Associate’s Degree and 2-3 years experience in merchant payment processing industry or equivalent experience of 5-7 years in a closely related field.
